our favourite music from 2010
Because everyone needs a list from us too. If nothing else, we care what we think.
Best albums of 2010 according to us:
Ladi6/The Liberation of…
Sample track: Bang Bang
We were seriously naive to wonder if the awesomeness of her first album could be repeated.
Mammal Airlines/Two Songs; Too Much AND Life of Mammals
Sample track: Sample the whole lot! Download both for free hereherehere.
When we heard they had a song called Nigella Lawson we knew they had to be alright, but little did we know how much we’d end up loving their music. Download, share it round, find their live gigs, enjoy.
Dudley Benson/Forest
Sample track: Ruru
Young Sid/What Doesn’t Kill Me
Sample track: Never Waste a Day
The lyrics to this particular song are amazing, every time I (Laura) listen to them I get that prickly-spine feeling.
Nas and Damian Marley/Distant Relatives
Sample track: As We Enter
We just can’t stop listening to this album.
Aloe Blacc/Good Things
Guess what the sample track is
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings/I Learned The Hard Way
Sample track: I Learned The Hard Way
Street Chant/Means
Every good thing you’ve heard about this album is…correct.
Sample track: Yr Philosophy
Gorillaz/Plastic Beach
Sample track: Stylo
Sherie Rene Scott/Everyday Rapture Original Broadway Cast
Sample track: Up the Ladder to the Roof
From the hilarity of You Made Me Love You to the strangely hypnotic Why, this is a beautiful album and I (Laura) think she seriously should have got that Tony award instead of Catherine Zeta Jones.
Dead Weather/Sea of Cowards
Sample track: Die By The Drop
Eru Dangerspiel/Great News for the Modern Man (Live at Auckland Town Hall)
Sample track: Sambaskool Dropout
Erykah Badu/New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh
Sample track: Window Seat
Beauty.
Homebrew/Last Week
Sample track: Friday
We saw them tweet about how this was written in 2007 and therefore ineligible for a ‘best of 2010’ list…but dammit, we bought it this year and we love it.
Songs we’ve loved this year:
Janelle Monae/Coldwar
Wanda Jackson/You Know I’m No Good
M.I.A/XXXO
(Nevermind all the hate, we love this poppy, uneasy, Real McCoy-ish song wholeheartedly)
Phoenix Foundation/Buffalo
(Rapturous!)
Grayson Gilmour/Loose Change
Big Boi/Shutterbug
Karen Elson/The Ghost Who Walks
Die!Die!Die!/Wasted Lands
Sage Francis/The Best of Times
Rye Rye feat M.I.A/Sunshine
And…we haven’t listened to the new Kanye yet. But ‘best of’ lists are nothing if not an education (well, when they’re from people whose opinion you trust anyway) so it looks like we’ll be sussing this out and soon. Also, we’ve probably forgotten heaps of amazing music from 2010, but we’ll try and hold back from continuing to add to this like we’d remembered it all along. (Like the Ali and Toumani album and anything by the Mint Chicks. D’oh!!)
