Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland, singing Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy in a contrapuntal way.
There’s a whole lot to love about this video. Firstly, that it exists: Judy Garland’s show to all intents and purposes was not created because she had a burning desire to broadcast a light variety show on a weekly basis but because of her financial situation at the time. Even then comparatively poor ratings (it was up against Bonanza, c’mon) saw it end after a season, after multiple producers and format changes and a statement being publicly issued saying “She’s far too insecure about television to exercise her own judgment. She knows what’s good for her.” Just imagine. All according to Wikipedia, bearing in mind.
Though both songs are about happiness, butting them against each other and slowing down the tempo gives them a yearning, almost sorrowful quality. Or maybe the sorrow comes from myself as viewer, knowing that Judy Garland would only be around for another five or so years, as well as the contrast of the song’s subject matter with the many intense sadnesses that occurred in her life. So often at the hands of others.
Barbra’s silky, controlled voice against Judy’s rich contralto is beautiful, as is their obvious affection for one another and general charisma - I love the little nose-to-nose moment just before they sing and the way Judy leans her head against Barbra’s shoulder. There’s a real restraint and gentleness in both their performances and yet so much emotion is conveyed. And they really knew how to properly banter in those days, right?
Just watch it. Then go read a Judy Garland biography.
