2 of 2: Photos from Aloe Blacc’s incredible show at Downstage/Studio in Auckland last night.
It was a truly amazing night, totally worth the initial hassle of leave-requesting, flight-booking, hostel-dwelling and forgetting to pack any clothes appropriate to Auckland’s weather. We loved it all - David Dallas’ genuine-ness, a cappella verses and opening track Big Time, Aloe Blacc’s impassioned but needle-sharp dancing, interaction with the crowd, and beautiful voice, from silky, confident falsetto to full-on belting. Love that he took risks with the arrangement of his biggest song I Need A Dollar, including bringing on surprise guest Maya Jupiter. Even the pushy people who shoved in front of us get a free pass for life because they took one look at our (good-sized) camera and scrambled apologetically to get out of our way (It’s hard to convey “really, we’re nobody” in a dark noisy room, the upshot of which is we got some decent full-length shots of Blacc).
Anyway, not going to do a full review, basically it was something pretty special and I’m glad we were there. And we found $3.50 on the ground on our way out. Are we the only people who look for money on the ground after gigs??
